Nutrition for Anorexia

 
A person displaying the symptoms of Anorexia eats very little. They claim not to be hungry and may even feel no hunger. In some cases, bulimia, the practice of removing food after eating by vomiting or purging, is also present.
Much is made of the complaint ‘Anorexia Nervosa’ where compulsively not eating is just one of the symptoms of a psychological disorder. Although this condition exists, it is important to point out that a connection with psychological disorders does not happen in all cases of anorexia and, when it does occur, is no more common than amongst overweight people. 
So, setting any psychological considerations aside for a moment, 
what is happening in the body of an anorexic person?

To look at, many anorexic people appear very skinny, but strangely, 
they are proportionally fat. Confused? ... Read on!
When we starve, the body actually holds on to its fat stores because
without them, we would simply die through a lack of the fuel needed
to drive the muscles of the heart and lungs.

Instead of burning stored fat, the body breaks down muscle tissue into
fat and urea. The urea is expelled as urine and sweat, and the
newly produced fat is burned to create energy. This clever survival trick
works two ways: 

•	It preserves existing fat stores.

•	It makes the muscles become smaller, so less energy is needed to drive them.

This clever trick is a brilliant way to survive a famine, but isn’t too pretty! Starvation gives us a body with a little less fat maybe... but a LOT less muscle!

This condition looks unattractive and even feels quite uncomfortable. Anorexics will often look in the mirror and say, “I’m so fat!” In a way they are right, in that they are proportionally fat.

Not only do they often have fatty deposits in the wrong places, but they also feel soft and flabby to the touch. Also, the body’s feedback system (proprioception) is sending signals to the brain, telling it that the body is proportionally fat, which is why many anorexics feel fat.

But what is the real issue here?
Overweight condition and anorexia are both caused by the same problem ... the appalling standard of nutrition in the food available in the ‘civilised’ world today.

Look at the facts. The last 50 years have seen a rise in obesity, anorexia, Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer and anti-social behaviour. All of these things have either attained or are close to attaining epidemic proportions. Although there are other factors involved, the single, key factor is nutrition.

When the food available is so nutritionally inadequate, imagine what happens when we try to reduce our intake to lose weight! Most of us have given up by lunchtime and remain overweight. Those few people who have iron willpower or who use artificial means to switch off their appetites tend to become anorexic.

Anorexia Testimonial
As a result of severe emotional turmoil I suffered from the life-threatening eating disorder, anorexia nervosa, for 18 months.
At the height of my disease my weight dropped to a low of 36 kgs (5.6 stone). 
Because of the lack of nutrition in my body, I lost my hair and fingernails. 
I also lost my dignity.
Although I was having weekly vitamin injections from my doctor, 
it didn't seem to help. I continued to get weaker and my desire for food
diminished even more.
One day I picked up a local newspaper and happened to see an advertisement 
that caught my eye. When I called for more information, Allan and Marilyn
Sudholz invited me to an Herbalife meeting. I decided to go. By the end of it, 
I was so impressed with what I heard I was willing to try the products.
I started drinking Formula 1 shakes up to 10 times a day. 
Within seven days my vitality returned and, for the first time in months,
